Eleven foreigners who were arrested by police on patrol along Embu- Meru highway on Sunday were yesterday evening charged with being in the country illegally.
They fined Sh. 300,000 each or 12 months imprisonment after they pleaded guilty before Chuka Principle Magistrate Benson Ireri.
Ireri also ruled they be repatriated back to their country of origin after they pay fine or serve jail term.
Ireri had earlier pushed the case to Thursday asking for availability of Amharic translator as the accused could not understand English or Kiswahili.
Ireri ordered for proceedings later in the evening after an interpreter was found.
However the translator requested for change of spellings of some names as per the charge sheet.
Athirati Haile, Genesio Whurku, Neresh Demeye, Aden Dedan, Mathias Shokore, Ker Saidi, Marikama Markes, Alfano Baraka, Elmako Kanabutu and Miskana Tamure who are allegedly of Ethiopian origin, were travelling to Nairobi aboard a probox before they were intercepted by police in Tharaka Nithi County.
The foreigners said they came to the country to source for employment due to poverty back in their country.
