Knut engage county government in a Brawl

The Tharaka Nithi County Government has been challenged by the Kenya National Union of Teachers to embark on a recruitment exercise for the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers across the county.

According to the Tharaka Nithi Knut Secretary General Njeru Mutani said the county government has been slow in allocation of funds to the education department.

He said other counties had achieved rapid development in the education sector and deployed ECDE teachers to various centers and challenged the Education department in the area to be more pro active.

“Other counties have already employed teachers but our county government is still moving at a snail pace”, Mutani said.

He further accused the county government of meddling in affairs of teachers’ employment and deployment to various schools and areas saying that responsibility should be left to the Teachers Service Commission.

Speaking in his office yesterday Mutani also called upon the county government to partner with the national government and upgrade structures of various primary schools around the county which he said are in poor status.

The Secretary General said the county is understaffed and some of the teachers have been in the same job group and need to be promoted but have never been.

“There are over eight hundred teachers in the county who need to be promoted and we are asking the Teachers Service Commission to consider them. Teachers are spending a lot of fortunes going for further studies and they should be promoted to boost their morale”, he said.

The Tharaka Nithi governor Samuel Ragwa had faulted TSC leaders in the county for job allocation of 14 teachers which he said the process of selecting teachers was not transparent.

“There were no equitable structures in place; the forms were issued behind closed doors and I have tangible evidence that the process was marred with corruption where Sh. 150,000 was dished out in issuance of forms”, he said.

He said TSC should conduct fresh appointment a move which was also supported by the Maara MP Kareke Mbiuki.
